Smart Sustainability
What do we mean by Smart Sustainability?
The KES Smart Sustainabilty initative focuses on the part smart systems can play in sustainability, renewable energy, and climate change remediation. It is well recognised that it is vital that the harmful effects of human activities on the environment, and the rapid consumption of the earth's resources, are reduced. Considerable benefits can be achieved in this area by applying intelligent systems methods and techniques to sensing, control, data analysis, prediction and modelling tasks in areas of carbon reduction, energy efficiency, renewable energy generation and related social, environmental and economic factors.
We have termed this concept 'Smart Sustainability'
Topics
Applicable topics include, but are not limited to, the application of intelligent (neural network, fuzzy, expert system, agent-based, etc) techniques to:-- Control and optimisation of renewable energy (photo-voltaic, wind energy, geo-thermal, biomass, etc) generation systems.
- Energy use monitoring and reduction.
- Sensors and instrumentation technology, virtual sensors.
- Smart monitoring and control using intelligent systems; high-efficiency switching systems; highly-efficient voltage conversion systems.
- High efficiency power storage systems; battery systems; reversible fuel cells; flywheel systems; super-capacitors.
- Full lifecycle analysis and triple-bottom line estimation
- Analysis of environmental or sustainability data
- Modelling climate and the effects of carbon emissions
- Novel primary sources; bio-mass generation schemes; stirling cycle engines; bio-fuelled diesel generators.
- Highly efficient building services.
- Full lifecycle sustainability analysis and triple-bottom line estimation
- Analysis of environmental or sustainability data
- Modelling climate and the effects of carbon emissions
Note that KES is also happy to accommodate more conventional aspects of sustainability issues and topics.
Conference on 'Sustainability in Energy and Buildings'
KES International is the First International Conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings, SEB'09, to be held in Brighton, UK, on 29 and 30th April and 1st May 2009. In addition to Smart Sustainability, papers are invited from a full range of sustainability-related issues relating to renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy efficient buildings and other sustainability topics. We are recruiting a programme committee for this event and would like to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in the conference. For more information on SEB'09 .. click here ..
